Cape York Day 9 Ferry to Thursday Island and Horn Island
Babcock have a helicopter base on a Horn Island so I was keen for trip over there to meet the crew and see the setup. Our guys usually fly direct from Cairns to Horn Island but we took the ferry to Thursday Island which took about an hour, then another 15min ferry to Horn Island. Horn Island main reason for existence now is the airport which services the surrounding islands but it was involved in World War II.

Thursday Island is pretty and I thought it would have been a tourist spot but from what we heard not really. Probably too hard to get too and not enough to do when you are there.

The other contract does Border Protection services surveying Australia waters all the way up to New Guinea.
We were pretty wind swept and tired when we got back. A Torrens Strait islander and his five little boys were fishing from the Seisia pier when we got back. Having a ball, little arms and legs everywhere, jumping in and out the water.
We went to DJ’s for the sunset and a dusk drink. DJ’s is a restaurant/bar sort of part of the caravan park, run by the same owner. It was just delightful (and I think he enjoyed the restaurant more than the caravan park, the amenities needed some repairs). The setup and atmosphere was just perfect, and of course the warm weather made it easy to sit and look out across the bay.
