Day 4 Innamincka Trip

I think it is Monday...doesn’t take long to lose track of the days....we’re staying at Innamincka and doing some exploring. Here are the campers packed up for the day.

Then we travelled to the dig tree, the place where the crew left food provisions for Burke and Wills and engraved in the tree what they had done. I think Burke missed them by 9 hours after they left (they had been waiting for him for 4 months in the middle of summer!). The landscape is bare, it would have been horrendous travelling. The flies drove me insane and we were only there 10min! (Saw another Ultimafe camper of course!).  Tim is so cranky...never seen so many in his life...more than Toyota’s.

Then to the grave of Burke, I’m not much of a history person, but could appreciate the harshness of what the explorers went through.  I let the men  read every placard as we walked by, and enjoying the colours of the Cooper Creek, wildflowers and wildlife.  (Only to find out later that night that Giselle was studying history and I should have paid more attention!).

At least camping, you can get away with bad colour clothing! I’m wearing my $4 gardening leggings.

Memorial statute for Burke where he died.

The colour of the landscape is amazing. These lovely yellow wildflowers covering a grey background is quite striking.

Back to the campers for a run, hot $2 shower at the “town”, afternoon drink, and then to the pub for a good hearty meal.

I actually thought there would be more to Innamincka, but it is truely just a pub and general store/service station, plus a historical centre. It’s 500km from anywhere, and all on dirt roads. And even the next place/town,  500km away isn’t much of a place, so I have found it a really remote location. It has been revived as a place to visit in the last 20 years, mainly to do with the history of Burke and Wills, but it’s hard to comprehend why else it is here. The camping on the river was great, but it’s not a place you go to visit for a weekend...a pass through to Birdsville etc. I can’t imagine how hot it must get in summer!
